fish advice/comments?

hi lovely Nor-Cal surfers, hope you got some good waves today.
question i wonder if some of you would care to respond to: i'm looking for a new board, have narrowed it down to a few fish designs. I'm wondering if any of you have or have surfed the Rusty Piranha, Lost Round Nose Fish, or have another fave fish that you love? I'm in SoCal now so I'm only in need of a fish that does well in 5ft & under most of the time. Don't think an old-school style is for me cuz i'm pretty small and if it's too wide, it's hard to paddle. the piranha and lost are pretty different, wondering what others who ride them have to say about them.

Anyone care to comment on these or a fish they love or think sucks?

thanks, any info is helpful!

Sorry if I sound like a snob, but the Rusty Piranha and the the Lost RNF are not fishes. They have 3 fins and have pulled in tails with minimal swallow, making them more of a thruster with some fishy qualities. A true fish has 2 keels (no center fin) lots of width in the chest for paddling, relatively flat rocker and a deep, wide swallowtail, making it ride completely different than a thruster.

That said, I don't think a "traditional" fish is out of the question for you. If you're afraid of it being too wide, have one custom shaped for you by a local shaper. They can take your size and weight into consideration and build you something that suits you way better than anything you get in the shop. Plus, a custom board is no more expensive or in many cases less expensive than a board in a shop.

Not sure where in SoCal you are, but Michael Zippi in Hermosa Beach makes excellent fish (all he makes) and he'll even let you demo out boards to see what sizes are good for you(many shapers will do this for you). If that's too far away, Go to the shops in your area and talk to people to find out which shapers are good in your area. There really is no substitute for a custom shaped board. Plus you can get that paint-job you always wanted.
